Welcome to a new weekly blog section all about fun and interesting Japanese words and phrases to help you out while traveling through Japan or even your journey mastering the beautiful (but sometimes complex) Japanese language.
Our first word is Irasshaimase (いらっしゃいませ) which is a way to say Welcome, often used by staff while entering a Japanese restaurant and some smaller, more homely shops in Japan.
It’s often loudly spoken at once by staff members as soon as you walk into said shop or restaurant, and can be quite startling if you’re not use to it, but now you know, it’s just staff warmly welcoming you into their store.
There’s nothing like exploring a side street in Tokyo at night and stumbling across a ramen bar inviting you in with its warm glowing red lanterns and delicious smell. Stepping in the door and hearing “Irasshaimase” from all around the bar, you know you’re about to have a life changing meal – yum!
